IMG_9439.HEIC

Overwintering dahlia tubers is crucial for ensuring you have blooms the following season.  Follow our step by step guide to ensure you are properly caring for your dahlia tubers during winter months.

Follow our 3 step guide for overwintering your dahlia tubers.

01

Pack for Storage

- Layer tubers in a container (cardboard box, plastic tote) with peat moss, vermiculite, or wood shavings.

- Ensure tubers aren't touching to prevent rot from spreading

-We personally store our tubers in ziplock bags, partially filled with vermiculite and a teaspoon of sulfur (to prevent mold). We poke holes in the ziplock for airflow.  Our ziplocks are then added to a plastic tote inside our walk in cooler. With our dry, arid climate in Colorado, dahlia tubers are prone to dry out and shrivel.

Experiment

Try different storage techniques to find the one that works best for your situation and climate

02

Store

Place in a cool (40-50 degree) dark, frost-free location, like a basement, garage, or cellar.  Tubers will turn to mush if they freeze.

03

Monitor

Check tubers monthly; remove any moldy tubers and lightly mist the medium if they're shriveling.  Mold will spread to other tubers if not mitigated. Dried up tubers will not produce viable eyes.
